A four-year letterwinner and captain in his senior year, Gary was an ace on the mound for the Nichols baseball team, posting a career record of 15-5. He still holds the College's single-season earned run average record of 0.81, which was the third-lowest average in the nation in 1975. Gary also holds marks in the Nichols College record books, ranking fourth in strikeouts (136) and fifth in innings pitched (175.2).

Gary's most memorable moment at Nichols was hitting a grand slam while earning the win on the mound with five innings of relief work (five strikeouts) at Georgetown in the season opener of his senior season.
Gary was a member of the N-Club in his junior and senior years and received the Margaret Conrad Chalmers Trophy for Baseball as a junior with a 5-1 record including a pair of shutouts and five complete games. As a freshman, Gary received the Unsung Hero Award after striking out 30 batters in 40 innings while going 3-0.
