ORLANDO, Fla. – The Nichols College men's tennis team suffered a 5-4 setback to Earlham College on Wednesday afternoon at the USTA Training Facility in Orlando, Fla.
The Bison dip to 1-3 on the season, while the Quakers improved to 9-3 with the win.
Earlham jumped out to an early 4-0 lead as freshman Brandon Giordanelli defeated freshman
Bruno Cavalacanti 6-0, 3-6, 10-5 at No. 5 singles. Sophomore Joaquin Lerner followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win over sophomore
Jack Donaldson at No. 6 singles, while senior Vojislav Tatarevic handed freshman
Brandon Stewart a 7-5, 6-2 setback at No. 4 singles. Sophomore Alexsandr Sergeev rounded out the singles wins for the Quakers with a 6-2, 1-6, 10-7 victory at No. 2 singles over junior
Blake Norton.
Nichols got on the board with a victory at No. 3 singles as sophomore
Guilherme Barbosa defeated junior Nicola Manni, 6-3, 6-1. The Bison also earned a win at No. 1 singles with sophomore
Brandon Howard besting senior Vitalii Stadnyk, 3-6, 6-4, 10-5.
Nichols was able to tie the match at 4-4 with matching 8-4 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The tandem of Barbosa and sophomore
Peter Coletti defeated Sergeev and sophomore Jason Lawson at the No. 2 position, while junior
Igor Markowski and Howard combined to beat Giordanelli and junior Adarsh Singh at No. 3 doubles.
The match came down to the No. 1 doubles matchup, which the Quakers pulled out 8-6 to earn the 5-4 victory, as Stadnyk and Tatarevic defeated Norton and freshman
August Moeller.
The Bison are back in action tomorrow morning when they take on McDaniel College in Orlando, Fla.
