Middlebury ousts Bison from NCAA Tournament, 5-0

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Nichols College men's tennis team was defeated by No. 3 Middlebury 5-0 in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday morning at the Proctor Tennis Courts.

The Bison close their season 18-6 after winning their fourth-straight Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship last weekend in Bristol, R.I. They move to 3-4 all-time in the NCAA Tournament – 3-1 in the First Round and 0-3 in the Second Round.

Middlebury jumped out to a quick 3-0 advantage after doubles play. Senior Chris Frost (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and freshman William de Quant (Monaco, France) started things off by defeating freshmen Gage Fox (Brandon, Fla.) and Austin DuBois (Simsbury, Conn.) by an 8-4 score at No. 3. Freshmen Kyle Schlanger (Summerfield, N.C.) and Noah Farrell (Wilton, Conn.) made it a 2-0 lead when the duo topped sophomore Joan Castillo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and senior Cam Lewis (Bolton, Conn.) in the No. 2 slot, 8-1. Junior Palmer Campbell (Nashville, Tenn.) and senior Peter Heidrich (Peoria, Ill.) were 8-3 victors over sophomore James Smith (Monte Sereno, Calif.) and junior Josh Halpern (Secaucus, N.J.) in the top spot.

The lead quickly grew to 4-0 when Schlanger defeated DuBois by set scores of 6-0 and 6-0 at No. 5 singles. The match concluded at No. 4 singles as de Quant topped sophomore Jake Zapatka (Wethersfield, Conn.), 6-1, 6-0.

The Panthers – who moved up three spots in this week's International Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Men's National Rankings – advance to face Bowdoin Sunday at 1 p.m.
