James Smith (Monte Sereno, Calif.) had wins in singles and doubles as the Nichols College men's tennis team defeated Eastern Nazarene 7-2 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Thursday afternoon at the Eastern Nazarene Tennis Courts.
The Bison got off to a good start, taking two of the three doubles matches. Smith and junior
Josh Halpern (Secaucus, N.J.) won at No. 2 doubles over senior Sam Son (Wilbraham, Mass.) and junior Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.), 8-5. At No. 3 doubles, sophomore
Joan Castillo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and senior
Cam Lewis (Bolton, Conn.) teamed up to defeat sophomore Andrew Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and senior Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.), 8-3.
The Lions (7-6, 1-3 CCC) cut the lead in half with a win at No. 1 doubles. Senior Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehobeth, Mass.) and freshman Vladislav Tolmachev (Perm, Russia) got the best of senior captain
Brandon Roode (Griswold, Conn.) and freshman
Austin DuBois (Simsbury, Conn.), 8-5.
Nichols (13-5, 5-1 CCC) took charge in the singles matches. Roode continued his strong play atop the Bison lineup with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Tolmachev. Smith took down McKay-Corkum in three sets at No. 2 singles, 2-6, 6-4, 10-5.
Son earned Eastern Nazarene's lone singles win on the day, prevailing at the No. 4 slot against Castillo. The senior dropped the first set 7-6 and led 6-5 in the second when his Castillo retired.
Halpern had no trouble at No. 4 singles, defeating junior Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) 6-0, 6-1. Sophomore
Jake Zapatka (Wethersfield, Conn.) defeated Steelman 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 singles while DuBois rounded out the day defeating Perron 7-6 at No. 6 singles.
The Bison host conference foe Endicott on Saturday for Senior Day at 3:00 p.m. The Lions play at Western New England on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
