Joan Castillo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) earned wins in singles and doubles as the Nichols College men's tennis team defeated Assumption 8-1 Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at the Pomfret School.
The Bison got off to a good start winning two of the three doubles matches. Castillo and junior
Josh Halpern (Secaucus, N.J.) wasted no time in taking down the sophomore pairing of Casey Hodor (Wickford, R.I.) and Marco Leung (Macao) 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.
At No. 3 doubles, senior
Cam Lewis (Bolton, Conn.) and sophomore
Jake Zapatka (Wethersfield, Conn.) played back and forth with sophomores Tom Knight (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Jakob Zyiak (Dunbarton, N.H.) before putting them away, 8-5.
The Greyhounds were able to get on the board with a win at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Chris Waung (Bolton, Conn.) and junior Viljami Rahnasto (Vantaa, Finland) got the pairing of senior captain
Brandon Roode (Griswold, Conn.) and sophomore
James Smith (Monte Sereno, Calif.), 8-4.
Nichols (2-2) swept through the singles matches. Castillo got the ball rolling, winning at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-3 over Zyiak while Halpern took care of Rahnasto 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 3 slot.
The deciding point came from No. 5 singles where Zapatka had no trouble with Hodor, winning 6-0, 6-0.
Smith battled it out in the second set and came away with the 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 2 singles over Leung. It took three sets in the No. 1 singles match but ultimately Roode got the best of Waung 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
Freshman
Austin DuBois (Simsbury, Conn.) closed out the day with a win at No. 6 singles over Knight. Dubois dropped a close first set before taking the second and third sets, winning 5-7, 6-2, 10-2.
"Solid win to start off break against a very good team," said Nichols head coach
Paul Brower. "Singles we are great, while at doubles we will need to look at a few things. All and all, it was a good start to the season."
The Bison play host to Rhode Island College and UMass Dartmouth on Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. Assumption travels to take on Le Moyne on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
