Box ScoreNORTON, Mass. – The Nichols College men's tennis team defeated Wheaton (MA) College 9-0 Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at the Clark Tennis Courts.
The Bison played some back-and-forth doubles matches before coming away with victories in each of them. Senior and defending Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Player of the Week
Justin DeLuca (Mashpee, Mass.), and his partner, junior
Brandon Roode (Griswold, Conn.), defeated sophomores Will White (Nantucket, Mass.) and Shreve Archer (Pebble Beach, Calif.) 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore
Carlos De La Cruz (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and freshman
Joan Castillo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) beat sophomore David Gassen (Dusseldorf, Germany) and junior Lawrence Chan (Lincoln, R.I.) at No. 2 doubles 8-5, while at No. 3 doubles, sophomore
Josh Halpern (Secaucus, N.J.) and freshman
James Smith (Monte Sereno, Calif.) got the best of freshman Alden Zeff (Stratham, N.H.) and senior Sam Jackson (Darien, Conn.) 8-2.
Nichols swept through the singles matches, winning each match in straight sets. DeLuca knocked off White 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles while Roode defeated Archer at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-1.
At No. 3 singles, Castillo upended Gassen 7-5, 6-1 and De La Cruz defeated Jackson 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Halpern bestedd Zeff 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
The defending CCC Freshman of the week,
Jake Zapatka (Wethersfield, Conn.), downed Chan 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles to round out the day.
The Bison close out their regular season tomorrow afternoon when they travel to play conference foe Western New England University at 4:00 p.m. The Lyons host Coast Guard Academy tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
