Bison end fall season with 7-2 loss to Coast Guard

Box Score

DUDLEY, Mass. – Senior Brandon Roode (Griswold, Conn.) picked up a win in singles as the Nichols College men's tennis team fell to Coast Guard 7-2 Monday evening at the Pomfret School.

The Bears (2-0) got things started by sweeping the doubles matches. Freshman Michael Melampy (Duxbury, Mass.) and classmate Benson Errington (Cypress, Texas) took care of freshman Keenan Hughes (Aurora, N.Y.) and senior Cam Lewis (Bolton, Mass.), 8-4.

The No. 2 doubles match finished next with freshman John Hu (Plainsboro, N.J.) and junior Robert Renfrow (Leonardtown, Md.) defeating junior Josh Halpern (Secaucus, N.J.) and freshman Austin DuBois (Simsbury, Conn.), 8-4.

Roode and freshman Jordan Ericksen (Bradenton, Fla.) battled with juniors Weston Fortna (Lebanon, Pa.) and Mark Guentert (Lilburn, Ga.) in the top flight but ultimately fell by a score of 8-6.

The Bison (1-2) got on the board after No. 1 singles when Roode defeated Guentert 6-4, 6-3. The win marks Roode's 58th of his career, leaving him eight behind Justin DeLuca for the school's all-time lead.

The Bears then won the No. 4 singles match with Melampy taking care of Hughes 7-5, 6-2. The match-clincher came when Renfrow took down Halpern in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

At No. 5 singles, Lewis battled back in the second set before dropping the set and the match in a tiebreaker 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

Nichols added another win at No. 6 singles when DuBois won his first collegiate match. After dropping the first set to Errington, DuBois battled back to win the last two sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Fortna rounded out the day for the Bears, defeating sophomore Jake Zapatka (Wethersfield, Conn.) at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-4.

"That is a solid effort against a much improved Coast Guard team," said Nichols head coach Paul Brower. "We fought at every position, but all and all, not a bad way to end the fall. We know what we need to work on now."

The Bison are done with their fall schedule while the Bears host Salve Regina on Friday, the 24th, at 3:00 p.m.
