Nichols Doubles Up Wheaton (Mass.), 6-3

NORTON, Mass. - The regionally-ranked Nichols College men's tennis team defeated Wheaton (Mass.), 6-3, in a non-conference match on Thuesday at the Clark Tennis Courts With the win, the Bison stand at 16-5 while the Lyons dip to 10-6 on the year.

Nichols senior Justin DeLuca (Mashpee, Mass.), sophomore Brandon Roode (Griswold, Conn.), freshman Eduardo Irizarry (Lajas, Puerto Rico) and graduate student David Drucker (Bellmore, N.Y.) were all double winners for the Bison.

Armed with a 2-1 advantage after the double session, the Bison reeled off three singles victories including a 6-4, 6-2 win by DeLuca at the first flight to clinch the match.

Wheaton senior Dennis Scarpa (Cheshire, Conn.) turned away Nichols freshman Josh Halpern (Secaucus, N.J.) by a score of 7-5, 2-6, 10-2 at No. 6 singles. Scarpa and freshman David Gassen (Dusseldorf, Germany) teamed up for an 8-2 victory at No.3 doubles over Halpern and freshman Carlos De La Cruz (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic). Junior Sam Jackson (Darien, Conn.) picked up the Lyons only other win on the afternoon with a 2-6, 6-4, 10-4 decision at No.5 singles against De La Cruz.

Nichols awaits the winner of Saturday's Commonwealth Coast Conference Men's Tennis Championship first round match between third-seeded Eastern Nazarene and sixth-seeded Wentworth. The Bison will host the semifinal round on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. at Assumption College in Worcester, Mass. Wheaton squares off with MIT in the NEWMAC men's tennis tournament on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
