Bison Shutdown Gordon, 9-0

BEVERLY, Mass. - The Nichols College men's tennis team blanked host Gordon, 9-0, on Saturday in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match played at the Bass River Tennis Club.

The Bison, ranked 18th in the region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), improve to 11-5 overall and 3-1 in the CCC while the Fighting Scots drop to 4-10 overall, 1-3 in the conference.Nichols came out on top in each doubles contest with graduate student David Drucker (Bellmore, N.Y.)  and senior Justin DeLuca (Mashpee, Mass.) defeating rookie Zach Hall (Sugarland, Texas) and junior Kenny Gaudio (Miller Place, N.Y.) at No. 1, 8-6, sophomore Cam Lewis (Bolton, Mass.) and rookie Carlos De La Cruz (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) beating senior Brandon Inkles (New York, N.Y.) and freshman Richie Armand (Hempstead, N.Y.) at No. 2, 8-4, and junior Paul Healy (Pomfret, Conn.) and junior Dan Roman (Tolland, Conn.) taking down freshman Joe Daugherty (Norfolk, Va.) and sophomore Mike Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) at No. 3, 8-3.

Hall took DeLuca to three sets at No. 1 singles, winning the first 7-6 (9-7), falling in the second 7-6 (9-7), and conceding the tiebreaker, 1-0 (10-5) for just his third defeat of the season. DeLuca had 13 set points before he took the second set. Similarly in the No. 3 spot, Inkles fell 1-0 (10-8) to the De La Cruz in the third after each picked up a 6-4 win in the first two sets. Nichols took the remaining four singles matches in straight sets to secure the overall victory on the day including a 6-3, 6-3 triumph by sophomore Andrew Haas (Whitinsville, Mass.) who picked up his third career win in CCC action.

The Bison travel to face both Curry and Emerson on the Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively. Gordon takes to the court again when they host CCC opponent Western New England at 3:30 p.m. also on Tuesday.
