BRISTOL, R.I. (April 13) – In a battle of Commonwealth Coast Conference unbeatens, the Roger Williams University men's tennis team emerged with a 6-3 victory over Nichols College Tuesday afternoon to take sole possession of first place in the TCCC. Both teams entered the day with identical 7-0 records in the conference and tied for first place in the TCCC. The loss for Nichols snaps a nine-match winning streak dating back to March 20.
Nichols trailed, 2-1, after doubles play, picking up its point with an 8-4 win at the third flight from David Drucker (Bellmore, N.Y.) and Eliot Wuhrmann (Fontainbleau, France), their sixth consecutive win together.
Justin DeLuca (Mashpee, Mass.) posted a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles and Drucker added a 6-1, 6-0 win at the second singles flight to put the Bison back on top, but wins for the home team at the third and fourth flights edged Roger Williams back ahead, 4-3. With the win, DeLuca remains undefeated on the year and ties the program's single-season singles victories record at 15. Drucker, meanwhile, stands undefeated in conference play at 7-0 and is 13-1 overall.
Tied going into the final set, Tyler McLaughlin (Hollis, N.H.) was edged at No. 4 singles, 1-6, 6-4, 4-6, and the Hawks went on to clinch with a win at the fifth spot.
With the victory, Roger Williams extends its regular-season conference winning streak to 20 matches, with the team's last loss a 4-5 setback to Western New England College back on April 9, 2008.
Roger Williams (11-6, 8-0 TCCC) heads to Eastern Nazarene Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. match, while Nichols (12-5, 7-1 TCCC) hosts Colby-Sawyer College Saturday at noon.
