DUDLEY, Mass. – Senior Jay Matthews' (Sanford, Maine) victory at No. 6 singles highlighted the Nichols College men's tennis team's 9-0 victory over Gordon College in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference Match Tuesday afternoon. It was Senior Day on the Bison's courts, as the two-year captain and lone senior posted a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Gordon's Dan Hayner.
Nichols, which won its third match of the season by a nine-point margin, improves to 12-6 overall and 4-3 in TCCC matches. Gordon dips to 5-12 and 2-6 in conference play.
Playing up at No. 5 singles, Dan Saucier (Newington, Conn.) rallied back from a 1-6 first set loss to win in three, taking the second, 6-1, before a 7-5 third set victory. The win marked the fifth in a row for the first-year player.
Stephen Carella (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Oliver McNutt (East Lyme, Conn.) edged ahead the single-season doubles wins record to 15 with their 8-4 victory over Carl Quinion and Evan Williamson. The Bison duo is now 15-1 on the year.
Tyler McLaughlin (Hollis, N.H.) snapped a six-match winless streak with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Blake Larson, playing up in the No. 2 singles spot today. Sophomore Jack Baker (Cheshire, Conn.) also halted a four-match skid with a convincing 6-1, 6-3 victory over Quinion at third singles.
Nichols takes on TCCC leader Roger Williams Thursday at home in the two teams' season finale Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
