Box Score MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – The Nichols College women's ice hockey team fell 3-0 to Salve Regina in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action Saturday evening.
Junior Danielle Phalon (Stoneham, Mass.) got things started for the Seahawks just 3:42 into the first period on a wraparound goal that beat senior netminder
Tori Gianformaggio (Huntington Beach, Calif.). Sophomore Amanda Cronin (Medfield, Mass.) assisted on the play.
Salve Regina (1-1-0, 1-1-0 ECAC East) stretched the lead to 2-0 at 9:12 in the second period when freshman Meredith Peppes (Lincoln, R.I.) wristed a shot past Gianformaggio. The shot was generated as the result of solid work along the boards, and quick, crisp passing. The puck moved from senior Michaela Chiuccariello (Winchester, Mass.) on one side behind the net, to senior Taylor Shepherd (Quincy, Mass.) on the wing, back out to Peppes at the point in a matter of seconds.
The Seahawks third and final goal came with a little puck luck. The Seahawks had fought to maintain a possession in the Bison zone, wristing shots into defenders in the crease and digging out rebounds along the boards. Finally, Phalon controlled a rebound to the side of the net about 10 feet away and snapped a shot on goal from the off angle. The shot skipped of the goaltenders skate and ricocheted five-hole.
The Bison (2-2-0, 0-2-0 ECAC East) were outshot 40-20 for the game. Senior
Grace Murphy (Montclair, Va.) and freshman
Laura Christie (Hudson, Mass.) paced Nichols with four shots apiece. Shepherd led the Seahawks with seven shots.
Gianformaggio stopped 37 shots but falls to 2-2-0 on the season. Freshman Kelsey Baldwin (Ganesevoort, N.Y.) moves to 1-1-0 on the year after registering 20 saves.
Nichols is still in search of its first win against Salve Regina as they fall to 0-12-1 all-time in the series.
The Bison host UMass Boston on Friday for their first home game of the year at 6:40 p.m. The Seahawks travel to take on Manhattanville Friday at 7:00 p.m.
