DUDLEY, Mass. – Junior Alyssa Tosti (Douglas, Mass.) tied a Nichols College program record with four goals and nine points in an 18-2 win over Wheelock College in non-conference women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at the Nichols Soccer Field.
Juniors Elizabeth Coleman (West Roxbury, Mass.) and Michelle Gardner (Ayer, Mass.), along with sophomore Gezell Gonzalez (Worcester, Mass.) and freshman Natalie Dawes (Amesbury, Conn.), each scored twice as the Bison (1-1-0) established a new school-record for goals in a game. The previous mark of 10 was set against Becker on Sept. 25, 2008.
Early goals from freshmen Alison DeGloria (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Jackie Bonney (Kingston, Mass.) put the Wildcats (0-2-0) ahead 2-0 just 6:32 into the match before Nichols reeled off 18 unanswered goals. Tosti netted a pair in a span of 1:43 to tie the match at two before Dawes first collegiate goal at 13:02 gave the Bison a 3-2 lead. Nichols led 9-2 at the break and held a 30-5 edge in shots.
In the second half, Gonzalez netted a pair while freshman Jillian Krish (Rockland, Mass.) notched a goal and an assist. Junior Sarah Whitestone (Dalton, Mass.) recorded four saves in goal to earn her first collegiate win while her counterpart, freshman Meghan Lewis (South Berwick, Maine), racked up 23 saves.
"The team focused on the things we spoke about in practice, including transition and making runs," said Nichols head coach Damir Pesa. "Their goalkeeper played an amazing game and made some spectacular one-on-one saves. Our team took the next step in terms of applying what we practice into a game. We have a tough opponent on Saturday, so hopefully some of this carries over."
Nichols finished the contest with a 53-6 edge in shots.
The Bison (1-1-0) return to action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. match at Johnson & Wales (RI). The Wildcats host Husson Saturday at 2 p.m.
