Box Score
NEWTON, Mass. – Junior Elizabeth Coleman (West Roxbury, Mass.) scored a pair of goals 2:28 apart in the first half to help the Nichols College women's soccer team to a 2-1 win at Mount Ida in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Freshman Brooke Maher (North Attleboro, Mass.) added an assist as the Bison (4-3-0) climbed back over the .500 mark heading into Saturday's 2 p.m. matchup with Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) foe Wentworth. The Bison won three games in all of 2012.
Sophomore Isabelle Moody (Naugatuck, Conn.) scored for the Mustangs, who fell to 1-5 on the season.
Moody gave Mount Ida a 1-0 lead 92 seconds into the match off a feed from junior Sierra Legge (Schodack Landing, N.Y.). Coleman responded with goals a 38:00 and 40:28 to give the Bison a 2-1 edge they would not relinquish.
Coleman tied the game at one when she gathered the ball in the box and used her right foot to loop it over the head of Mustang freshman goalie Rebecca Beaulieu (Weare, N.H.). Just over two minutes later, Maher played Coleman through into space where, one-on-one with the keeper, she beat Beaulieu to the top right corner. The assist was the first collegiate point for Maher.
The home team threatened again early in the second half, with Nichols junior goalie Sarah Whitestone (Dalton, Mass.) making stops on attempts by Legge and freshman Hannah Brackett (Voorheesville, N.Y.). An effort later in the half by Brackett was blocked by the Nichols defense, and several shots by Legge sailed either just wide of or over the woodwork.
Mount Ida outshot Nichols 15-9. Whitestone recorded five saves to move to 4-2 on the season. Beaulieu made three saves for Mount Ida, which had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Each team was caught offside on two occasions.
Mount Ida hosts Rivier Sunday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match at 2 p.m.
