Women's Soccer Defeated Narrowly by Plymouth State, 2-1

DUDLEY, Mass. (9/15/2026) - The Nichols College women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to Plymouth State University Tuesday afternoon at Nichols Soccer Field.

The loss moves Nichols to 0-4-1 on the season, while Plymouth State improves to 4-1-0.

After the Panthers opened the scoring in the 10th minute, the Bison quickly answered with an insane attempt at goal. Just over four minutes after Plymouth State took the lead, junior Madison Dembowski collected a pass from Maggi Cullivan and unleashed a shot from near the corner flag. The strike sailed toward goal and careened just over the outstretched reach of Plymouth State goalkeeper Liv Desruisseaux, finding the back of the net to level the match at 1-1 in the 14th minute.

The goal marked Dembowski's first of the season and capped an impressive individual performance, as she finished with three shots, all of which were on target.

Plymouth State regained the advantage in the 31st minute when Drea Oswell converted a feed from Corinne Palhof, sending the Panthers into halftime with a 2-1 lead.

The Bison continued to battle throughout the second half, creating several opportunities to pull level. Dembowski forced another save early in the half, while Avery Gravel, Haley Bethin, Maggi Cullivan and Alyssa Senecal also tested the Plymouth State defense. Cullivan nearly found the equalizer in the 75th minute when her shot struck the crossbar.

Nichols continued to pressure in the closing minutes, with Senecal and Cullivan each forcing saves from Desruisseaux in the final 12 minutes. Despite the late push, Plymouth State held on for the 2-1 victory.

Elizabeth Johnson turned in a strong performance in goal for the Bison, making nine saves on 11 shots on target. Nichols finished the afternoon with 13 shots, putting eight on frame, while Plymouth State recorded 25 shots with 11 on target.

The Bison return to action Saturday, September 19th, when they travel to face Endicott College at 3:00 PM at Hempstead Stadium for a conference match up.
