Box Score
DUDLEY, Mass. – Junior Bryanna Goodine (Dracut, Mass.) and freshman Jillian Krish (Rockland, Mass.) each scored goals for Nichols College, which fell to the University of New England 3-2 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at the Nichols Soccer Field.
Junior Margaret Palmer (Scarborough, Maine) scored a pair of goals for the Nor'easters – including the game-winner in the 81st minute – as they moved to 4-2-0 with the win. Junior Sarah Whitestone (Dalton, Mass.) recorded 13 saves for the Bison, who fell to 2-3-0.
Palmer opened the scoring at 13:58 when she hurled a defender and knocked in a pass from senior Katy Marshall (Eliot, Maine) to put UNE ahead 1-0. Krish evened the match at one as she launched a free kick from 30 yards out that struck the hands of UNE senior goalkeeper Gina Iannazzi's (Methuen, Mass.) hands and fell into the net.
The Nor'easters regained the lead at 2-1 just before the half on junior Jayne Kelly's (Hooksett, N.H.) second goal of 2013. Senior Alexis Wells (Franconia, N.H.) slid the ball past a defender to Kelly, who banged a shot off Whitestone's legs and into the right corner of the net. The half ended with UNE holding a 13-6 edge in shots.
UNE extended its lead to 3-1 on Palmer's second marker of the game at 81:10 as she tucked a shot inside the left post. Less than three minutes later, the Bison cut their deficit to one when Goodine lofted a shot from outside the box over the keeper's head and into the left side of the net.
"The effort was there. That's never going to be a question," said Nichols head coach Damir Pesa. "We need to fine tune some things we can control, things like possession and 50-50 balls. We're a pretty young team, but it's going to come. They just have to learn to play the ball when under pressure and develop a better awareness of who is open and who is not."
The Nor'easters finished the matched with a 29-4 edge in shots. Iannazzi finished the match with one save to move to 3-2-0 on the season. Freshman Brielle Robinson (Monson, Mass.) played the second half and made three saves.
The Bison return to action on Tuesday when they head to Becker for a 5:30 p.m. match. The Nor'easters host Colby Tuesday at 6 p.m.
