Trinity sidesteps Nichols in non-conference action, 9-1

Box Score

HARTFORD, Conn.-  Junior Grace Murphy (Montclair, Va.) scored the first power play goal of the season for Nichols College at Trinity, however, the Bison fell to the Bantams 9-1 Tuesday night  at Williams Rink in the Koeppel Community Sports Center.

Trinity had its way from the start when freshman Alessandra Bravi (Montreal, Quebec), positioned just inside of the blue line, lofted a shot that floated across the ice and into the top left corner of the Nichols net to give the Bantams a 1-0 lead 2:43 into the game. A little over 12 minutes later, senior Whitney Colbert (Ithaca, N.Y.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal, as it was all the offense Trinity would need.

Early in the second period, Murphy scored to cut the Trinity lead to 2-1 with assists going to senior captain Megan Gerein (Dubuque, Iowa) and junior Lisa Coskren (Norwood, Mass.). Senior Abby Ostrom (Carlisle, Mass.) answered for the Bantams with another goal 10 seconds later to put the Bantams on top 3-1. Junior Lucy Robinson (Toronto, Ontario) and sophomore Shelby Labe (Pine Brook, N.J.) tacked on two more in the second to give Trinity a 5-1 lead heading into the final period of action.

The Bantams added four more goals in the third, including two from senior co-captain Emily Kleidon (Oakdale, Minn.), a second from Ostrom, and one from sophomore Brooke Heron (South Salem, N.Y.). The Bantam defensive unit was strong all night, allowing just 15 shots, 14 of which stopped by senior goaltender Alexa Pujol (New Canaan, Conn.).

Three goalies split time in net for Nichols, combining for 27 saves on 36 shots. Junior starter Tori Gianformaggio (Huntington Beach, Calif.) stopped four shots. Labe, Heron, and Robinson also posted two assists apiece in the game. The win is Trinity's highest scoring game since Jan. 10, 2013, when the Bantams shutout the University of New England, 10-0.

Nichols plays at Manhattanville Friday evening before returning home to host the Valiants Saturday at 4:40 p.m. at Levy Rink.
