Tosti's goal helps Nichols close season with shutout win at Curry

Box Score

MILTON, Mass. - Junior Alyssa Tosti (Douglas, Mass.) scored on a breakaway 15 minutes into the second half to break a scoreless tie and lift the Nichols College women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Curry College in the season finale Tuesday night at William M. Katz Field.

The win snaps the Bison's nine-match losing skid and sends them into the off-season with a final record of 6-12-0 (1-8-0 CCC). Nichols - which was 0-20-1 in its last 21 CCC matches dating back to 2011 - has won three of its last four matches against Curry (6-9-2, 1-7-1 CCC) and improved to 13-7-1 lifetime against the Colonels.

Junior Michelle Gardner (Ayer, Mass.) sent Tosti in alone on a breakaway against senior Hayley Lorge (Beverly, Mass.), and Tosti fired a shot inside the left post at 59:53. The goal was Tosti's eighth of the season and first since Sept. 24.

"We definitely wanted to end our season on a positive note, and I told our student-athletes that before the match," said Bison head coach Damir Pesa. "This game meant a lot to us. I thought we started a little slow but played a great second half. I couldn't be happier with the result."

Senior Sarah Whitestone (Dalton, Mass.) was credited with 17 saves en route to her fourth shutout of the season. She completes her first season as a member of the soccer program 6-12-0.

Curry outshot the Bison 22-14 and held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Lorge finished with seven saves.

"I know things are going to be so much better next year," added Pesa. "These nine one-goal losses can easily be turned into nine wins, and that's exciting. I think our student-athletes are going to be pumped heading into off-season workouts. They've maintained a great attitude all season long. I can't say enough about how positive they have stayed and how hard they have worked. Our record definitely does not reflect their efforts. Our spring season is going to be huge. I can't wait to see everyone play again."
