Bison Topped by Franklin Pierce, 3-1

BURRILLVILLE, R.I. – Seven different skaters recorded a point as Franklin Pierce defeated host Nichols, 3-1, in a non-conference women's ice hockey contest on Tuesday night at Levy Rink. With the win, Franklin Pierce (5-10-0) snapped a four-game skid while the Bison dip to 3-14-0.
 
Freshman Michaela Faia (Malden, Mass.) took advantage of a power-play at 6:58 in the first with a point-blank one-timer with help from classmates Karsyn Baker (Detroit, Mich.) and Colleen Doucette (Wakefield, Mass.). The Bison outshot the visitors 10-6 as each team had one opportunity with extra personnel.
 
Just 1:50 into the second frame, Franklin Pierce was awarded a penalty shot on a tripping infraction. Freshman Bryana Harron (Woburn, Mass.) converted the chance as she beat the Nichols netminder on the blocker side. The Bison later used a power play to bring the game within a goal. Junior Megan Gerein (Dubuque, Iowa) threaded traffic off helpers from sophomores Tawny Buelow (Willow Grove, Pa.) and Grace Murphy (Montclair, Va.) at 14:37. Just under three minutes later, freshman Nicole Palermo (Warwick, R.I.) extended the Franklin Pierce lead shortly after a faceoff. Junior Jamie Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) and freshman Francesca Paciello (Clinton, N.Y.) each received credit on the play. Franklin Pierce claimed a 10-3 advantage in the shot column and had five power play chances in the frame while Nichols went 1–for-3.
 
The hosts took nine of the 12 shots in the third and came up empty on a pair of power play chances as the Ravens went 0-for-1.
 
Overall, Nichols finished with a 22-19 edge in the shot column and both teams converted power play.
 
Raven junior backstop Amela Gray (Bozeman, Mont.) turned away a game-high 21 shots as she improved to 5-9-0 on the season. First-year Nia Kelly (Cary, N.C.) made 16 stops for the Bison as she slipped to 3-7-0.
 
Nichols hits the road this weekend for a pair of ECAC Women's East games. The squad tangles with UMass Boston on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and takes on St. Anselm on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Franklin Pierce travels to Sacred Heart for a 7:00 p.m. contest on Friday.
