Box Score HARRISVILLE, R.I. (Feb. 3) – First-year Madyson Moore paced New England College with what proved to be the game-winning goal and added an assist in a 5-3 win at Nichols on Friday night in an ECAC East women' ice hockey contest. With the win, the Pilgrims improve their record to 7-10-2 on the season and 5-6-2 in the conference while the Bison slip to 6-13-1 overall and 3-9-1 in the league.
The Pilgrims lit the lamp first as senior Chelsea Torrico worked up the ice and found first-year Aubrey Fischer who was skating from around the net for the one-timer at 9:05. First-year
Grace Murphy found an opening on the upper left corner of the net with 4:52 remaining in the opening stanza. The power play goal was aided by a feed by senior
Mandy Manopla.
New England College took the lead again 14:27 into the second period as rookie Avery Kauffmann fired a laser past the Nichols netminder.
Senior Kaleigh Costello increased the Pilgrim lead as she deposited a rebound shot threading a scrum in front of the net 30 seconds into the third period. Sophomore Alexis Fitzpatrick along with Moore each had a stick in the marker.
Manopla attempted to close the gap with a wrister from the right faceoff dot that repelled off the post with less than nine minutes left in the frame. Moore then pushed the Pilgrims lead to 4-1 on an unassisted goal at 13:06.
With exactly four minutes remaining, sophomore Kristin Dehm teamed up with Fitzpatrick and senior Alicia Michonski for the visitor's fifth goal of the evening.
Nichols went on to net the final pair of tallies in the contest. First-year
Tawny Buelow swiped the puck away from the defender and took advantage of a close range shot at 16:57.
Sophomore
Megan Gerein brought the Bison within two as 37 seconds remained in the contest. She received help from seniors
Hannah Tardif and
Courtney Carey.
Nichols capitalized on two of the five power play opportunities while New England College finished 0-for-3.
Rookie Lauren Hopps evened out her record at 2-2 while turning away 24 shots for the Pilgrims as Sophomore
Francesca Palazzo halted 23 and first-year
Tori Gianformaggio stopped 11 in relief.
Both teams conclude their weekend with afternoon contests tomorrow. The Bison entertain Castleton at 4:40 p.m. on “Autism Awareness Day,” and New England College will be at Manhattanville for a 3:00 p.m. matchup.
