Nichols Upended by St. Anselm, 6-1, in Home Opener

Burrillville, R.I. – Senior Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) led St. Anselm with a pair of goals as the Hawks defeated host Nichols 6-1 on Friday night in an ECAC Women's East hockey game at Levy Rink. With the win, the Hawks improve to 2-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the league while the Bison even out at 1-1-0 overall and dip to 0-1-0 in the loop.
 
The Hawks took advantage of an early 5-on-3 opportunity as Giarrusso deposited her first goal of the season with feeds from freshman Sarah Geisinger (Willoughby, Ohio) and junior Andi Foss (Elko, Minn.) with 6:33 elapsed in the game. Sophomore Grace Murphy (Montclair, Va.) answered 4:11 later as she stole the puck in the zone and immediately fired on net. Just over a minute later, Giarrusso potted what proved to be the game-winning goal as she teamed once again with Foss as well as junior Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.).
 
St. Anselm held a 2-1 lead until 14:04 in the second period as Winters swiped the puck from the defense and scored with 19 seconds remaining on the penalty kill. First-year Marianne Kristiansen (Anchorage, Alaska) beat traffic to net her first collegiate goal at 17:59 in the stanza. Geisinger and freshman Halle Kent (Lake Placid, N.Y.) each received credit for a helper.


Sophomore Robin Yoshida (Los Alamos, N.M.) assisted on a pair of third period tallies for the Hawks beginning with a freshman Alex Kazmer (Crystal Lake, Ill.) marker at 2:21. The sophomore then teamed with classmate Tiffany Herron (Clinton Township, Mich.) for the final goal of the night with 15:26 left in the frame.
 
Hawks sophomore Janice Michaud (Westwood, Mass.) picks up her first win between the pipes to improve to 1-0-0 in a 14 save evening. First-year netminder Nia Kelly (Cary, N.C.) moved to 1-1-0 on the season with a game-high 42 stops.
 
Nichols entertains Mass.-Boston tomorrow night at 7:40 p.m. while St. Anselm hosts Manhattanville on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
