WORCESTER, Mass. (Sept. 22) – Led by medalist Eric Hedberg, the Western New England University men's golf team placed first at the Commonwealth Coast Conference Fall Golf Invitational hosted by Nichols College at the Green Hill Golf Course Thursday afternoon. Hedberg, a sophomore, shot a 73 (+1) on the par-72, 6,483-yard course to lead the Golden Bears to a one-stroke victory over University of New England.
Western New England (305), University of New England (306), Endicott (311) and Nichols (321) will advance to the CCC Championship, hosted by Western New England in the spring. Defending champion Nichols edged out Wentworth (325) by four strokes, while the Roger Williams club team rounded out the field with a 363.
Hedberg had a consistent round, leading the 30-player field in both par-3 and par-4 scoring, while recording three birdies. As a team, the Golden Bears led the six teams with 10 birdies and placed three golfers in the top 10. University of New England's team all carded below a 78 (+6), placing all five within the top nine. The Nor'Easters led the field in par-4 scoring by six strokes.
Nichols' first year
Kevin Wheeler, senior Griffin Andrews of University of New England and Hedberg's teammate Kevin Ricker finished in a three-way tie for second place at two-over. Wheeler led the field with four birdies in his first match at Green Hill.
Endicott's top finisher was sophomore Nick Erlichman, who placed fifth with a 75 (+3). Wentworth was led by a ninth-place finish from Jose Armenteros, who carded a 78 (+6). Roger Williams received a pair of 88 scores from seniors Peter Dunn and Sean Bouchard.
Junior
Joe Gallagher finished tied for 14th for the Bison with an 81, while
Brian Sears and
Matthew Quigley finished two strokes back in a tie for 19th.
Nichols continues its fall slate on September 27th in a home 'B' tri-match with Wentworth and Becker at noon.
