Box Score HARRISVILLE, R.I. (Dec. 6) – Wesleyan freshman Cara Jankowski scored the eventual game-winner and recorded a pair of assists to lead the Cardinals in a 4-1 win over Nichols in a non-conference women's ice hockey matchup on Tuesday night at June Rockwell Levy Rink. The win snaps a four-game skid for the Cardinals as the team improves to 2-4-0 while the Bison slip to 3-5-1.
Neither side looked to have a significant advantage in the first period as each team had several scoring chances. The Cardinals struck first with a rebound goal that slid to the right corner of the net by sophomore Glenn Hartman-Mattson 7:42 into the period. Junior Becca Koppel and sophomore Sydney Morgan each helped setup the score. The first Wesleyan goal was Nichols answered back less than a minute later on the power play when sophomore
Megan Gerein wristed the puck from the right corner boards off the goalies pad and into the net. Junior
Mary Fehr fed Guerin the puck to receive the assist. The Bison showed a tremendous presence in the faceoff circle winning 15 of the 19 in the period while Wesleyan outshot Nichols 13 to 9 in the first.
The score held at 1-1 through the second period. The Cardinals increased the pressure on the Bison outshooting them 14-9 in the period. Wesleyan's best chance of the period came in the final minute. First year Alicia White received the puck in front of the net off a faceoff, but her shot was blocked away with the left pad by Nichols' first year goaltender
Rebecca Cohen.
With 46 seconds off the clock in the third Jankowski tipped in a rebound to put the Cardinals ahead 2-1 with help from senior M.J. Cardin and senior Jill Reynolds. At 10:26 the visitors added an insurance goal as White received a pass from behind the cage and found the bottom right of the net. Freshman Hannah Jellinek sent the final pass as Jankowski also aided the marker. The final tally of the evening came with 2:50 left as Reynolds snuck the puck in the lower left of the net following feeds from Cardin and Jankowski.
Wesleyan junior goalie Ashleigh Corvi earned the win while turning away 28 shots as Cohen collected 37 saves for the Bison.
Nichols converted one power play opportunity as Wesleyan went 0-for-1 with extra personnel.
The Bison venture to Williams on Saturday for a 5:00 p.m. faceoff at the Lansing Chapman Rink in Willamstown, Mass. Wesleyan opens a home-and-home weekend series at Sacred Heart on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
