Pio Second, Bison Ninth at Duke Nelson Invitational

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (Sept. 27) – Led by a second-place tie by senior Pat Pio (Somers, Conn.), the Nichols College golf team tied for ninth place at the 26th annual Duke Nelson Invitational hosted by Middlebury College at the Ralph Myhre Golf Course Sunday afternoon. Pio shot a two-day, four-over 146 to tie for second with Bob Bruso of Worcester State.

Pio stood in second at +1 after the first day with a one-over par 72 and completed the second day with a 74. Tournament medalist Nick Antonelli of Salem State rebounded from a 75 (+3) to shoot a tournament-low 70 on the final day to earn top honors one stroke ahead of Pio and Bruso.

Nichols combined for a two-round total 640, and stood in a tie for sixth place after the first day of play with a composite 319. The team posted a 321 on the second day of play, and finished competition tied with Worcester State. Salem State took top team honors with a composite 606, and was followed by Trinity (619) and host Middlebury (621).

First year Nick Deni (Enfield, Conn.) finished in a three-way tie for 52nd, rebounding from a tough opening round score of 85 to post a 77 on the final day for a two-round total 162.

Josh Paulhus (Sutton, Mass.) was three strokes behind with a two-day total 165 (80, 85) and senior Shawn Santos (Agawam, Mass.) placed in a six-way tie for 77th with a two-day 170 (82, 88). Bruce Carter, Jr. (Worcester, Mass.) posted a two-round 173 (88, 85) to finish in 91st position.

Nichols travels to the ECAC Championships October 3-4 at the Tunxis Plantation Country Club in Farmington, Conn, where the Bison placed second last year, led by a silver medalist performance by Pio.
