Golfers Take Second at Worcester State Invite

STERLING, Mass. – The Nichols College golf team placed three individuals in the top 10 on the leaderboard as the Bison took second place at the Worcester State Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the par-71 Sterling National Country Club. The Bison, led by a third-place tie from junior Shawn Santos (Agawam, Mass.) finished with a composite 304, six strokes behind top team Salem State.

Competitors battled the periods of intermittent rain during the duration of the tournament, as the Bison finished six strokes ahead of third-place Trinity College and 14 strokes ahead of host Worcester State and Bentley University, who tied for fourth.

Santos finished with a 73 (+2), five strokes off the leader, to tie with Amherst's Chris Valentine for third.

Senior Chris Healy (Charlton, Mass.) rallied from a tough front nine to shoot a tournament-low 34 on the back nine, finishing in a tie for fifth place with a 74 (+3).

Junior Pat Pio (Somers, Conn.) stood alone in seventh place with a 75 (+4), while senior Chris Brock (Pomfret Center, Conn.) finished tied for 32nd with an 82 (+11). Sophomore Dan Cafasso (Prospect, Conn.) rounded out the Nichols squad at 13-over in a tie for 42nd in the 77-player field.
