Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --Just four days after the two teams skated to a tie, the MIT women's ice hockey team received a pair of goals from freshman Clarion Hess to defeat Nichols College, 2-1, in ECAC East action Tuesday night in the Johnson Ice Rink. Rachel Bowens-Rubin made 36 saves while allowing just one goal to pick up her second win of the year. The Engineers now improve to 2-7-1 on the season while Nichols falls to 1-11-1.
Hess opened the scoring early in the first period with a power-play goal, forcing home a rebound on Stephanie Brenman's shot from the blue line. Tech's lead would hold up into the first intermission, as the Bison were unable to convert on a pair of MIT penalties in the stanza despite outshooting their hosts, 14-9, in the frame.
Krista-Jean Forand (Plymouth, Mass.) put Nichols on the board, hooking up with Hannah Tardif (Laconia, N.H.) and Mandy Manopla (Wellington, Fla.) for the equalizer midway through the second period. Both goaltenders were solid for the remainder of the frame, as Bowens-Rubin and Christine Rigosi (Ridgewood, N.Y.) each stopped 13 shots in 20 minutes.
It appeared that the two teams would be unable to settle the score in regulation for the second straight time, as the game remained tied with less than six minutes to go. However, with just 5:39 left on the clock, Hess found the back of the net on a pass from Kameron Klauber, to give the Cardinal and Grey its second lead of the night.
Bowens-Rubin and the MIT defense were able to withstand the late attack by the visitors, including a man advantage over the final 46 seconds, the Bison's sixth power play of the game without a conversion. Tech finished one for three on the power play. Rigosi made 29 saves in the losing effort.
MIT is back in action on Friday, January 16 at New England College at 4:00 p.m. Nichols will play at Salve Regina on Friday at 9:00 p.m.
