Box Score HARRISVILLE, R.I. – The Nichols College women's hockey team picked up its first league point with a 4-4 overtime draw with MIT Friday evening at June Rockwell Levy Rink. First-year forward Mandy Manopla (Wellington, Fla.) led the Bison with a goal and an assist.
Nichols (1-9-1, 1-6-1 ECACE) opened the scoring just one minute into the frame when Manopla one-timed in a pass across the netfront from Krista-Jean Forand (Plymouth, Mass.). Hannah Tardiff (Laconia, N.H.) set up the play with a pass from behind the net to earn the second assist.
MIT (1-6-1, 1-6-1 ECACE) wasted no time knotting it up, as leading scorer Kameron Klauber converted a pass from below the left circle from Catherine Harding just 1:09 later.
Clarion Hess picked up the second assist on the goal before giving the Engineers the lead at 6:02, knocking in a rebound off of Klauber's shot from in front.
Sydney Gilbert (Portage la Prairie, Man.) tied the game up at 2-2 at 9:48 with a wraparound low-angle shot that she bounced off MIT netminder Rachel Bowens-Rubin's pads. Claire Smith (Eden, N.Y.) picked up the assist.
Nichols took a 3-2 lead early in the middle frame with a power-play score, as Brittany Nardone (Billerica, Mass.) fired a slapshot from the high slot past Bowens-Rubin just 33 seconds into the stanza after collecting the puck off an offensive zone faceoff won by Manopla at the right dot.
Five seconds after killing off a penalty, Hess tallied her second goal of the night, again connecting with Klauber to knot the game at 3-3 with 11:10 left in the middle period.
Kayla Robidoux (Cumberland, R.I.) fed Allison Peters (Westford, Mass.) on a two-on-one break early in the third period and Peters banked the puck off the post and the back of Bowens-Rubin to give Nichols a 4-3 lead 15 seconds into the final frame.
Klauber jammed in a loose puck at 8:55 of the third to knot the game again.
Both teams had quality chances in the extra frame, notably when Nichols' Gilbert stripped the puck from a defender at the Bison blueline and flipped it ahead to Gretchen Lange (Greenville, R.I.) from her knee. Lange carried the puck the rest of the way, but her shot from the left circle missed just wide right.
MIT held a 3-1 shot advantage in the overtime and a 43-31 lead overall.
Nichols netminder Melissa Mansfield (Medford, N.Y.) made 39 saves, while Bowens-Rubin stopped 29 Bison shots.
Both teams are back in action Saturday at 3 p.m. before meeting again Tuesday in Cambridge at 7 p.m. The Bison travel to Holy Cross Saturday, while MIT hosts Salve Regina Saturday.
