CCC Release
BIDDEFORD, Maine – Following the program's 13th championship, seven members of the Nichols men's tennis team earned All-Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) honors, highlighted by freshman
Leon Zeis earning Rookie of the Year honors. The seven honorees mark the most of any institution in this year's batch of All-Conference awards.
Zeis was dominant in both conference and non-league contests throughout the 2023 campaign, primarily in the role of No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles to also earn First Team nods in both categories. The Wuppertal, Germany native put together a 7-11 overall singles record at No. 2, which came following competition from opponents spanning all three NCAA divisions. In conference play, he posted a 3-2 record. He also played three matches as Nichols' No. 1, going 1-2 in the top spot. Zeis was able to shine at No. 1 doubles, compiling a 9-11 overall record, going 6-1 through CCC play.
Frederik Bertams, Zeis' classmate and partner at No. 1 doubles, also earned First Team honors in doubles and singles. In doubles, he put together an 9-6 (6-1 CCC) record, appearing mostly on the first court throughout the season. In singles, competing primarily at No. 3, helped lift the Bison, posting a 6-3 (5-0 CCC) ledger in the regular season.
Zeis and Bertrams teamed up to post an 8-5 (6-1 CCC) at No. 1 doubles in the regular season and helped boost the Bison to a lead in the CCC Championship match with an 8-4 win over Konnor Collins and Jon Trevethan.
Also making an appearance on the First Team for singles was Nichols' ace,
Trevor Schwarzmann, who went a 9-10 overall, while posting a nearly perfect 6-1 mark in CCC play. Schwarzmann had a tough task throughout the entire campaign on the first court, earning victories in a match against Division II Stonehill and a 7-6, 7-5 win against Jon Trevethan in a 7-2 team victory over Roger Williams to help Nichols take sole possession of the CCC's top spot on April 8.
Caio Dieckmann and
Yannick De Vet rounded out the singles selections, as both landed on the Third Team. Dieckmann went 7-7 (4-1 CCC), mostly appearing in the No. 4 spot in 2023. The Rio de Janeira, Brazil native made his presence known at the Division I level with a three-set victory over his fifth court opponent in a match at Mount St. Mary's (Md.) Dieckmann was also named to the Third Team in doubles with partner
Santiago Perez.
Perez was part of a duo with Dieckmann that went 7-4 (5-1 CCC) in the regular season and 2-0 in postseason play. Perez and Dieckmann's wins in the postseason helped the Bison substantially in a battle for the CCC crown.
De Vet's 12-6 (5-0 CCC) mark was also good for a Third Team selection, with wins coming against Division II Bentley and a 6-0, 6-0 decision in a CCC match against Wentworth. In the CCC Championship win over Roger Williams, the Walchwil, Switzerland product was one of the two decisions, defeating Johnny Baldyga by a score of 6-4, 6-0.
De Vet was also a Second Team doubles selection with partner Ludwig Schlatzer. The duo posted a record of 6-2 (5-0 CCC) in 2023, with notable triumphs (8-1 and 8-3) against Roger Williams in both the regular-season meetup and championship match, respectively.
Nichols and its seven award winners now gear up for the national stage. The Bison will make their 13th appearance in the NCAA Tournament on Friday, May 5 in a First Round match against Houghton at 2:00 p.m. at the Hunt Tournament Courts on the campus of Williams College.
