Bison fall to defending National Champions Bowdoin 5-0 in NCAA Second Round

Box Score

FALMOUTH, Maine.
– The Nichols College men's tennis team's season came to an end as it fell 5-0 to Bowdoin in the NCAA Second Round Friday morning at the Foreside Indoor Courts.

This is the second consecutive season that the Bison have been put out by the Polar Bears in the NCAA Second Round as Bowdoin went on to win its first National Championship with a 5-0 win over Middlebury in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Due to bad weather the previous night the match was pushed indoors where the Polar Bears would take care of business. Bowdoin only dropped three total games on the day in matches that completed – including on two through its sweep of doubles.

Junior Gil Roddy (Concord, Mass.) and freshman Justin Patel (Livingston, N.J.) got things started with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles over sophomore Igor Markowski (Paris, France) and freshman Peter Coletti (Beverly, Mass.).

The Polar Bears followed that up by blanking sophomore Blake Norton (Stratford, Conn.) and freshman Brandon Howard (Hamden, Conn.) 8-0 at No. 1 doubles. Junior Luke Tercek (Washington, D.C.) and sophomore Grant Urken (Purchase, N.Y.) took the win.

The sweep of doubles was complete as at No. 2 doubles senior captain James Smith (Monte Sereno, Calif.) and freshman Guilherme Barbosa (Bradenton, Fla.) dropped their first match as partners since October 2016, 8-1, to junior Kyle Wolfe (Darien, Conn.) and sophomore Jerry Jiang (Qingdao City, China). Smith and Barbosa had won 15-straight doubles matches prior to the loss.

Bowdoin continued its dominance on the singles side. Urken blanked Howard at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-0 before Roddy defeated freshman Jack Donaldson (Easton, Md.) 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles to advance to the NCAA Third Round.

The Bison had already dropped a set on each of the other matches before the overall match was decided.

All-Time Series
This is only the second time that the Bison and the Polar Bears have played each other and both meetings have come in the NCAA Second Round and ended with the same result. Bowdoin won the first meeting last year 5-0 on its way to winning the National Championship.
