BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Nichols College men's tennis team's NCAA run came to an end Saturday afternoon as it fell to No. 4 Bowdoin College, 5-0, in the NCAA Second Round at the Pickard Tennis Courts.
The Bison were ousted from the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second-consecutive year as they were eliminated by Middlebury a year ago. Nichols closes its season with the second most wins in program-history (20) and winners of its fifth-straight Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship.
They move to 4-5 all-time in the NCAA Tournament – 4-1 in the First Round and 0-4 in the Second Round.
The Polar Bears (16-3) got off to a fast start, sweeping through the doubles matches. Sophomore Kyle Wolfe and freshman Jerry Jiang took care of business against junior captain
James Smith (Monte Sereno, Calif.) and freshman
Igor Markowski (Paris, France), 8-0, at No. 2 doubles.
Bowdoin next picked up a win at No. 1 doubles as freshmen
Blake Norton (Stratford, Conn.) and
Aidan Stuart (Orange, Conn.) fell to sophomore Luke Tercek and senior Luke Trinka, 8-1.
The Bison were able to squeak out a couple points at No. 3 doubles before ultimately taking the loss. Senior Chase Savage and sophomore Gil Roddy defeated senior captain
Josh Halpern (Secaucus, N.J.) and junior
Jake Zapatka (Wethersfield, Conn.), 8-3.
The Polar Bears then quickly won straight sets on No. 6 and No. 5 singles to clinch the match. At No. 6 singles, freshman Grant Urken (Purchase, N.Y.) took down Stuart 6-0, 6-0 before sophomore Gil Roddy (Concord, Mass.) defeated Markowski 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
Bowdoin took the first set in each of the remaining four matches that did not finish.
The Polar Bears advance to the third round where they will await the winner between Stevens and MIT. They will play Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
