Nichols finishes third at CCC Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€“ Junior Kevin Wheeler (Agawam, Mass.) and sophomore Colin Whitney (Lomgmeadow, Mass.) tied for second place to help the Nichols College golf team to a third-place finish at the 2014 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Invitational Sunday at Franconia Golf Course.
 
Wheeler and Whitney both finished with a two-day total of 147; Wheeler posted a 73 on his scorecard Saturday and a 74 Sunday (+3) while Whitney took three strokes off Saturday's 75 and finished the event +5.
 
Freshman Nick Wage (Holden, Mass.) shot a 75 on both days to finish the event with a score of 150 (+8) and sole possession of sixth place. Junior Benjamin Ilg (Bristol, R.I.) shot an 82 – which was four strokes higher than Saturday's total – and finished in 16th place at +18 (160). Freshman Evan Ryan (Norton, Mass.) finished 20th as he recorded a two-day score of 171 (+29).
 
Endicott (302-298-600) and Western New England (295-305-600) finished with identical team scores, with the Gulls taking home the crown and the conference's berth into the NCAA Division III Championship next month in Greensboro, N.C. by winning the tie-breaker based on the fifth score in Sunday's round. UNE finished fourth at 639 (322-317).
