Bison open conference play with 6-1 win at Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Nichols College men's tennis team opened the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) schedule with a 6-1 win over Salve Regina University Saturday morning at the Leroy Avenue Courts..

The Bison got off to a strong start, sweeping through the doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, graduate student Justin DeLuca (Mashpee, Mass.) and junior Brandon Roode (Griswold, Conn.) defeated senior Colin Gunning (Norwell, Mass.) and sophomore Khoa Nguyen (Haverhill, Mass.) 8-1.

Sophomore Josh Halpern (Secaucus, N.J.) and senior Dan Roman (Tolland, Conn.) typically play out of the No. 3 slot for doubles, however they were bumped up to No. 2 doubles on Saturday and defeated juniors Monaf Awwa (Old Lyme, Conn.) and Matthew Carroll (Hackensack, N.J.) 8-0. At No. 3 doubles, junior Andrew Haas (Whitinsville, Mass.) and freshman Dan Roberts (South Windsor, Conn.) defeated sophomore Matt Gingras (Wethersfield, Conn.) and freshman Ned Richard (Kennebunk, Maine) 8-1.

The Seahawks (0-3, 0-1 CCC) picked up their first point of the day in No. 6 singles. Freshman C.J. Maksut (Saco, Maine) defeated sophomore Jonathan Roy (Rowley, Mass.) 6-2, 6-0.

Nichols (8-1, 1-0 CCC) did not drop a set in any of the remaining singles matches. At No. 1 and No. 2 singles, the Bison failed to drop a single game. DeLuca won 6-0, 6-0 over Gunning at No. 1 singles while, at No. 2 singles, Roode defeated Nguyen 6-0, 6-0.

Halpern rounded out the day by defeating Gingras at No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Joan Castillo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) was leading Awwa at No. 3 singles 6-1, 2-1, and freshman Jake Zapatka (Wethersfield, Conn.) had the lead over Carroll 6-0, 5-0 at No. 4 singles before play finished for the day.

The Bison will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Eastern Nazarene at 4:00 p.m. The Seahawks begin a four-match road trip on Tuesday when they play Roger Williams University at 4:00 p.m.
