Nichols captures eighth at Rich Korzec Memorial Invite

Bison bring home Worcester Collegiate Golf Championship

SUTTON, Mass. – Led by sophomore Kevin Wheeler (Agawam, Mass.), the Nichols College golf team placed eighth at the 2013 Rich Kozrec Memorial Invite Tuesday morning at the Blackstone National Golf Course. The Bison's team score of 336 placed them in a tie with Salem State.

Wheeler finished three-over par at 75, which placed him in a tie with Western New England's Eric Hedberg and one stroke behind Bentley's Harry Kirkpatrick. Wheeler shot a 36 on the front nine and a 39 on the back nine. As a result, Wheeler was a medalist in the Worcester Collegiate Golf Tournament as the Bison took home the crown by viture of having the lowest team score amongst all Worcester-area schools competing in the Rich Kozrec Memorial Invite.

Sophomore Jordon Kadlik (Kennebunk, Maine) was the next highest finisher for Nichols as he tied for 35th place with an 84 (+12). Senior captain Matthew Quigley (Sturbridge, Mass.) was next in 58th place with an 88 (+16), followed by sophomore Nick Masciadrelli in a tie for 59th place with an 89 (+15) and freshman Bobby Lucy (Fitchburg, Mass.) in a tie for 62nd place with a 90 (+18).

In terms of the Worcester Collegiate Golf Championship (using scores above), Kadlik placed fourth, Quigley seventh, and Masciadrelli eighth.

Western New England won the tournament with a final tally of 309. The top five was rounded out by Rhode Island College (322, +21), UMass Dartmouth (323, +34), Castleton State (327, +35) and Franklin Pierce (328, +40). Western New England also won the team title in 1999 at Sterling Country Club.

The annual Worcester State Invitational that has been hosted each spring since 1997 was renamed in honor of former 14-year head coach Rich Korzec, who passed away last spring. Korzec also worked on campus as an associate director of facilities.  

The Bison compete at the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship this Saturday and Sunday at the Beverly Golf and Tennis Club.
