SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Nichols College women's ice hockey team fell to host Saint Michael's, 1-0, despite outshooting the Purple Knights 48-27 in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's East contest at Cairns Arena on Friday night.
Sophomores
Alyssa Bufis (Linden, N.J.) and
Grace Murphy (Montclair, Va.) led the Bison barrage with seven shots on goal apiece while Junior
Megan Gerein (Dubuque, Iowa) and sophomore
Taylor Brown (Winthrop, Mass.) each fired off five shots at the cage. Sophomores
Kerri Nadeau (Chepachet, R.I.) and
Lisa Coskren (Norwood, Mass.) along with first-year
Julia Mastrototaro (Holden, Mass.) also accounted for a total of 12 Bison shots.
Sophomore Maire Bartkus (Acton, Mass.) scored for Saint Michael's, while senior Erin Stevens (Watertown, Conn.) pitched her second shutout of the season by making 48 saves to give her 2,412 career stops, moving her into 14th place among goalies that have played in a Division III conference.
Bartkus ripped a shot from the blue line that slipped in to put the hosts ahead, 1-0, 7:13 into the second period. With around two minutes to play in the frame, first-year Caitie Shea (Smithfield, R.I.) hit the post before sending a second shot just wide of the Bison net.
Stevens turned away all 21 Nichols shots in the third period, including four within the final minute of play after the visitors had pulled their goalie. First-year
Nia Kelly (Cary, N.C.) posted 26 saves in net for Nichols.
Nichols (3-18-1, 1-13-1 ECACE) heads to #4/3 Norwich tomorrow for a 3:00 p.m. game. Saint Michael's (3-19-1, 2-15-0 ECACE) is back in action tomorrow when it hosts Manhattanville at 3:00 p.m.
