Whitney wins individual crown as Bison place fourth at ECAC Championship

BERNARDSTON, Mass. - Sophomore Colin Whitney (Longmeadow, Mass.) finished nine-over par to capture the individual crown and help the Nichols College golf team place fourth at the 2013 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championship Sunday at Crumpin Fox Golf Club. The Bison posted a team score of 651 (324-327; +75).

Whitney shot a 78 yesterday and a 75 this morning to finish with a two-day total of 153 (+9), which was one shot lower than Fitz Bowen of Middlebury College (79-75-154). This is the second time Whitney has topped the leaderboard at an event this fall as he led all golfers at the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Qualifier back on Sept. 19.

Junior Kevin Wheeler (Agawam, Mass.) started the day in a tie for 22nd place but finished the event in a six-way tie for ninth. He shaved three strokes of Saturday's score (82) to post a 79 Sunday and finish +17 (161).

Freshman Nick Wage (Holden, Mass.) closed the event at +26 (83-87-170) as he shared 33rd place with four other student-athletes.Sophomore Tyler Sleeper (Indian Orchard, Mass.) completed 36 holes with a score of 171 (85-86-171), which left him at +27. Freshman Evan Ryan (Norton, Mass.) was the fifth and final golfer for Nichols, and he also shot a 171 (81-90-171; +27) to share 38th place with Sleeper and Brandon Brown of Amherst. 

Middlebury won the event with a team score of 635 (318-317; +59), followed by Western New England (326-322-648; +72) and Elms (328-321-649; +73). Westfield State closed day one in second place, but did not complete the event and was disqualified.

The Bison close the fall season at the NEIGA Championship on Oct. 27-28 at The Captains Golf Course in Brewster, Mass.
