Gulls soar past Bison, 70-51

DUDLEY, Mass. – The Endicott College women's basketball team defeated Nichols College 70-51 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Thursday evening at the Nichols Athletic Center.

Senior Jen McBrien (Medfield, Mass.) filled the stat sheet with four points, nine rebounds and nine assists to pace the Gulls (12-8, 8-5 CCC). Junior Samantha Crough (Cohasset, Mass.) led all scorers with 13 points while juniors Jennifer White (Libson, N.H.) and Julie Manning (Hull, Mass.), along with sophomore Kayleen Whall (Foxboro, Mass.), each tallied 11 points.

Sophomore Sarah Whitestone (Dalton, Mass.) and senior Hayley Zophin (Framingham, Mass.) each scored 12 points for Nichols, which fell to 6-13 (3-10 CCC) with the loss. Freshman Jessica Kelliher (Marshfield, Mass.) netted seven points.

Endicott raced out to a 26-16 lead midway through the first half and led by 14 at the break (42-28). The Gulls outrebounded the Bison 25-9 through the opening 20 minutes and picked up assists on 13 of their 16 field goals. Whall and Manning paced the Gulls with nine points each while McBrien dished out eight assists. Junior Devon Spirka (Wilmington, Vt.) scored nine scored nine points to lead the Bison while Wilson added six points.

The Gulls extended their lead to 24 in the second half on a jumper by junior Ashley Walenta (Plainfield, Connn.) with 12:25 on the clock, and their lead swelled to as many as 29 followed a basket by junior Jordan Ferland (Charlestown, N.H.) shortly thereafter.

Endicott picked up assists on 23 of their 28 field goals and outrebounded the Bison 53-31, led by McBrien's nine and eight from Manning. Zophin snared a team-high eight boards for Nichols, which forced 19 turnovers. Overall, Endicott shot 41 percent (28-of-69) compared to 36 percent for the Bison (21-of-58).

The Bison return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest against Wentworth. Endicott (12-8, 8-5 CCC) heads to Western New England on Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest.
