Women's Hoops Claims CCC Bid Despite 69-47 Loss at Salve

Turpel nets nine points from three

Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. (Feb. 14) – The Nichols College women's basketball team fell to Salve Regina, 69-47, Tuesday evening in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game. The Bison fall to 5-19 overall and 4-13 in CCC games. The Seahawks improve to 16-8 overall and 13-4 in league play.

Despite the loss, Nichols locked up a trip to the CCC playoffs after a two-year hiatus, securing the eighth seed in the tournament which begins on Tuesday, February 21.

Carly Turpel led a spread-out Bison offense with nine points on a 3-of-5 three-point shooting effort and added four rebounds. Chelsea Shaughnessy added eight points and a game-high five steals. She stands two steals shy of the Nichols College single-season steals record with 109 on the year.

Marissa Pendergast led Salve Regina with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Lindsay Shorey scored 16 points to go with nine blocks, four rebounds and four steals.

The teams traded the lead twice early before Salve Regina took the lead for good on a Laura Anne Dinan layup before the five-minute mark passed. The Seahawks stretched it to six before Turpel sank a three to cut the lead to one possession. A 6-0 Salve run over the next two-and-a-half minutes broke it back to a nine-point advantage before Turpel swished a long-range three.

A Shaughnessy steal led to a Kasey Pelletier dish to Kristina Lindgren to again bring the game within reach at four points, but the Seahawks closed the half on a 10-0 run to carry a 37-23 advantage into the locker room.

Salve Regina used an 11-0 run early in the second half to push its lead to 27 points. The Bison then held the Seahawks to just two points over a seven-minute span while putting up 13 points to cut the deficit to 16, but that was as close as Nichols would get.

The Seahawks dominated the paint to claim a 42-12 point advantage and outrebounded the Bison at a 47-28 clip, using 16 offensive boards to put up 19 second-chance points. The Bison's bench scored 26 points to the Seahawks' 21.

The Bison host Gordon on Saturday at noon for Senior Day when Nichols will honor Shaughnessy and Emily Yourie in their final regular season home game.
