BREWSTER, Mass. – Sophomore
Kevin Wheeler (Agawam, Mass.) shot a 75 and won a playoff hole to capture the medalist trophy as the Nichols College golf team tied for 16th place at the 78th annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship Sunday afternoon at The Captains Course.
The Bison finished with a team score of 329 (+41) and were paced by Wheeler, who finished the par-72 course at +3 and defeated George Gillmore of UMass Dartmouth by paring the first playoff hole. Among Division III institutions, Nichols finished seventh.

Bobby Lucy (Fitchburg, Mass.) tied for 87th place as each shot an 84 (+12). Junior
Brian Sears (North Grafton, Mass.) and freshman
Colin Whitney (Longmeadow, Mass.) finished in a tie for 116th place at +14 (86).
The Corsairs took home the Division III crown with a total of 312 (+24), edging Husson University by one stroke. Endicott placed third at 315 (+27), followed by Rhode Island College at 316 (+28) and Springfield College at 322 (+14).
Due to the impending threat of Hurricane Sandy, the Championship was shortened from 36 holes to an 18-hole event. One hundred and seventy-one golfers from Divisions I, II and III competed. The NEIGA was pleased to have Cleveland Golf / Srixon return as the 'Presenting Sponsor.”
The New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) has been in existence since 1934 and includes 47 member colleges and universities in New England and New York. It is considered to be the oldest and largest college golf tournament.
The event completes the fall schedule for the Bison.
