(Jan. 25) – The Nichols College women's basketball team came alive in the second half, but couldn't overcome a 15-point halftime deficit in a 72-57 Commonwealth Coast Conference loss at Curry Wednesday evening. The Bison (4-13, 3-7) saw four players score in double digits and were led by junior forward
Hayley Zophin's third double-double of the season.
Zophin pulled down a game-high 11 boards to go with 12 points which included an 8-for-10 effort at the free-throw line.
Chelsea Shaughnessy also scored 12 while adding seven rebounds and a team-high five steals.
Kristina Lindgren chipped in with 12 points and
Alexis Wegrzynek added 11.
Curry (7-10, 5-5 CCC) was led by 13 points from Julia Scrubb, and received 11 points and a team-best eight rebounds from Hailey Rafferty. Kylie Beltz also scored 11 and added five assists, while Katie King put up 11 points.
In the opening half, Curry got points at the line on four-straight possessions as they overtook an early Nichols lead. The Colonels used a 14-3 run to expand their lead to 12, scoring nine at the line in the spree. Curry built up a 15-point lead at the break and was afforded 13 points at the free throw line on 81.3% shooting (13-of-16).
Nichols came out firing in the second half, opening the stanza on a 19-6 run that brought the Bison within three just eight minutes into the frame. But the Colonels held the Bison to just three points over the next six minutes and used back-to-back three-pointers from Ashley Assarian and Hailey Rafferty to regain an 18-point lead, 62-44.
Fouls continued to play a big role in the game, as the Colonels saw Scrubb, Assarian and Jeanette Fallon fouled out within two minutes of each other. Nichols capitalized with 6-of-7 free throws afforded in the span and followed with a steal and dish from Lindgren to Shaughnessy to cut the Colonels' lead to nine.
Katie King sank a three-pointer on Curry's next possession to take the wind out of the Bison's sails and outscored Nichols, 10-4, in the final two minutes to finish out the 72-57 win.
Each team committed 24 turnovers in the game, but the Bison converted that into 13 points. Curry held a 34-18 scoring advantage in the paint, and used its league-best three-point defense to keep Nichols scoreless from beyond the arc in the game.
Nichols returns to Dudley Saturday to host Western New England in a 2 p.m. game. Curry travels to Gordon Saturday for a 1 p.m. game.
