Women's Hoops Halts Skid, Defeats Gordon, 57-38

Shaughnessy leads defense to best outing since 2010 season opener

Box Score WENHAM, Mass. (Jan. 21) — The Nichols College women's basketball team halted a five-game skid with a 57-38 victory at Gordon in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game at Bennett Athletic Center. Nichols' stingy defense was again in full force, holding the Scots to the lowest offensive total since last season's opener (Lasell, 34 points).

After the Bison netted the opening seven points of the game, the Scots finally broke onto the boards at 13:40 when Leanna Tallamy hit a jumper to make a 7-2 game. Tallamy then went on to bury a free throw and a jumper to close the gap to just two points at 11:52. From there, however, the Bison went on a surge behind standout play from Kasey Pelletier, who netted eight points and grabbed three steals in the stanza, and Chelsea Shaughessy, who grabbed an impressive 10 boards to leave the Scots trailing 26-12 at the break.

Nichols carried that momentum into the second half, going on a 10-0 run in the first three and half minutes to further the gap to 36-12. Though Tallamy would net the Scots' next eight points to threaten a comeback, Nichols held fast to the lead to cruise to the eventual 19-point victory.

Kristina Lindgren led the way for Nichols with 18 points, five rebounds, and five assists, while Shaughnessy ended the outing with seven points, 13 rebounds, and four steals. Tallamy rounded out the effort with a 23-point, 11-rebound double-double for the Scots while Brooke Kratche recorded 10 points and five rebounds.

The Scots travel to Western New England on Wednesday, January 25 for a 5:30p.m. start, while Nichols, now 4-12 overall, 3-6 in the CCC, is at Curry on the same day for a 6:00p.m. tip-off.
