League-Leading UNE Downs Women's Hoops, 65-35

Shaughnessy records game-high eight steals

Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. (Jan. 14) – Led by 21 points from sophomore guard Lauren Rousseau, the University of New England women's basketball team dealt host Nichols a 65-35 loss in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon. The Nor'easters, winners of three of their last four, remain atop the CCC standings with a 9-3 overall record and a 4-1 conference ledger. Nichols falls to 3-10 overall and 2-4 in league play.

Junior forward Hayley Zophin had her third-straight double-digit scoring game with 10 points, and added five boards. Junior Chelsea Shaughnessy recorded a game-high eight steals.

Rousseau had 11 after the first half and finished the game shooting 5-for-8 from three-point range. Joining her in double-digits were forwards Margo Russell with 11 and Beth Suggs (Bath, Maine) with 10 and six boards.

Turnovers plagued the Bison in the opening half as 22 errors led directly to 22 UNE points and a 31-19 deficit at the break. The Nor'easters opened the game on a 9-0 run before Zophin hit a put-back to get Nichols on the board nearly three-and-a-half minutes in. From there, UNE scored eight straight points for a 15-point advantage before the midway point of the half.

Nichols settled down against the league's top team and used four steals among a 13-5 run to cut the Nor'easters lead back to seven, but a three-pointer from Rousseau put UNE back ahead by double-digits and the Nor'easters went on to hold a 12-point lead at the break.

UNE shot 50% in the second half while holding the Bison to a 6-for-25 effort (24%). The Nor'easters bench totaled 11 points in the frame after a 17-2 run put the visitors up by almost 30 with 5:27 to go.

The Nor'easters held a 45-27 rebounding advantage in the game after the Bison outrebounded them in the opening half by a 20-18 margin.

In the heart of the CCC schedule, Nichols travels to Roger Williams Tuesday for a 6 p.m. game. UNE travels to Eastern Nazarene Tuesday for a 6 p.m. contest.
