Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. (Feb. 5) –The Nichols College women's basketball team grabbed a 50-30 edge in rebounds to come away with a 62-46 The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over Gordon College Saturday afternoon. With the victory the Bison improve to 9-11 overall and 3-6 in the TCCC, while Gordon falls to 2-19 overall and 1-8 in the conference.
Leading the way down low was Bison forward and senior
Jessica Nelson (North Providence, R.I.), nearly recording a double-double in the first half with 12 points and eight rebounds. Nelson would finish the game with 19 points and 12 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season.
The play of the Bison in the post was the story of the first frame. By half's end Nichols had a 29-15 edge over the Fighting Scots on the boards. Fourteen of the Bison rebounds were on the offensive side of the ball, but due to their poor shooting from the field, the opportunities were there. Heading into halftime the Bison were shooting only 31.4% from the field and 25% from beyond the arc, but their rebounding ability gave them a 13 point lead with 2:56 to go in the half.
As Nichols continued to struggle shooting the ball Gordon found their stride in the closing minutes. A quick 6-0 run by the Fighting Scots made the score 29-22 Nichols heading into the locker room.
The momentum did not carry into the second half as the Bison got right back to work on the boards and started the half with a 10-2 run. By the midpoint of the half the Bison had increased their lead to 51-32 and would not look back from there, coming away with the victory.
Nichols sophomore
Kristina Lindgren (Sturbridge, Mass.) was the second leading scorer for the game with 14 points, while Gordon freshman Lauren Kranyak led the way with 12 points for the Fighting Scots.
Nichols looks to continue its winning ways on Tuesday at 7:30 pm as the Bison host their final home game of the year against Wentworth. Gordon College will also be playing host on Tuesday night against Colby Sawyer at 6 pm.
