Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. (Feb. 20) – The #3 Norwich women's ice hockey team rolled in its regular season finale to a 7-0 win over Nichols in ECAC East action at Kreitzberg Arena on Sunday. The Cadets (23-3-1, 17-0-1 ECAC East) extended their unbeaten streak to 15 straight games with the win on senior night.
The Bison (4-20-0, 3-15-0 ECAC East) claim the eighth and final seed in the ECAC Women's East Tournament and will travel right back to Northfield to face the top-seeded Cadets next Saturday at 3 p.m. in the quarterfinal round.
Junior forward Julie Fortier had two goals to lead the offense. Elle Kadel, Mollie Fitzpatrick, Caitie Banfield, Sophie Leclerc and Amanda Wilks each had two points as well.
Fortier started the scoring by following up her initial shot that was saved by Nichols goaltender
Melissa Mansfield (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and beating her top shelf to give the Cadets a 1-0 lead at the 9:24 mark of the first period.
Norwich opened it up in the second period with four goals starting with Brittany Casey tallying her first goal of the season at the 5:00 mark of the period off assists from Fitzpatrick and Kadel.
Fortier potted her 20th goal of the season 5:37 later on a power play with an assist from Melissa Rundlett to stretch the lead to 3-0.
Just 51 seconds later, Wilks tallied her second goal of the season by capitalizing on a Nichols turnover at the blue line. Wilks split the defense and then dangled the puck in front of Mansfield before beating the Nichols' goalie with a backhand into the top-right corner of the net to make it 5-0.
Kadel tallied her first goal of the season at the 8:29 mark of the third period with assists from Fitzpatrick and Sarianne Lynn.
Scardino capped the scoring at the 14:50 mark by throwing a puck off a Nichols defenseman and into the net from behind the goal line. Brittane Michaud and Leclerc picked up assists on Scardino's eighth tally of the season.
Kelly Fisk stopped all seven shots she faced to pick up her second shutout of the season and improve to 3-1-0 on the year. Mansfield was saddled with the loss for the Bison after stopping 24 shots in the first two periods before being pulled in favor of
Christine Rigosi (Ridgewood, N.Y.) for the third period. Rigosi made 12 saves on 14 shots.
With a win next Saturday, Norwich would host the ECAC East Final Four on March 5 and 6 at Kreitzberg Arena as the Cadets look to win their third-straight ECAC East Tournament title.
