(Jan. 8) – The Roger Williams women's basketball team snapped Nichols' four-game win streak with a 73-57 win in the The Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon. The Hawks (7-3, 1-0 TCCC) saw four players score in double digits, led by 18 points and eight rebounds from freshman Kaitlyn Bovee. Nichols (6-6, 0-1) was led by senior forward
Jessica Nelson (North Providence, R.I.), who notched 18 points and eight rebounds.
Roger Williams jumped out to a 6-0 lead, and Nichols played catch-up throughout the half, bringing it within one point on five occasions before the Hawks went on a 12-6 run over the final three minutes of the half to hold a 35-28 lead at the break. Bovee poured in eight of her12 first-half points while pulling down a pair of defensive boards and dishing an assist in the spree.
Both teams were plagued by turnovers in the opening frame as the Bison committed seven within the opening 10 minutes, finishing with 11 to give the Hawks 10 points off turnovers in the half. Nichols'
Chelsea Shaughnessy (Halifax, Mass.), meanwhile, collected three steals in just five minutes on the floor in the frame, helping force the Hawks to turn over the ball seven times.
The Hawks opened the second half on a 17-6 run to break the game open and hold a 52-34 lead, but Nichols responded with an 11-0 run to bring it back within reach by the 10:16 mark, 52-45. That was as close as the Bison would get, however, as Roger Williams used a pair of three-pointers and a 7-of-8 free-throw performance down the line to put the game back out of reach.
Bovee finished with 14 points, five steals and six boards for the Hawks, while Ari Renwick added 17 points. Elizabeth Kilzi joined in the double-digit scoring with 10 points.
Ashley Robidoux (Milford, Mass.) added 17 points for Nichols, while Shaughnessy finished with five steals to go with two points, a block and three rebounds in 18 minutes.
As a team, Roger Williams shot 42.4% from the floor and 46.2% from three-point range. Nichols was hampered by 18 turnovers, from which the Hawks created 22 points. Nichols parlayed Roger Williams' 15 turnovers into 16 points.
The Bison continue TCCC play Tuesday with a 5:30 p.m. home game against Endicott. Roger Williams hosts Western New England College Tuesday in a 6 p.m. conference game.
