Women's Hoops Downs Colby-Sawyer, 63-52, in Bahamas

Box Score NASSAU, BAHAMAS (Jan. 3) – The Nichols College women's basketball team defeated Colby-Sawyer, 63-52, in a non-conference matchup at the Bahamas Goombay Shootout Monday afternoon in the Kendal Isaacs National Gymnasium. Nichols improves to 5-5 with its third win in a row, while Colby-Sawyer falls to 4-5 after its fifth consecutive loss.

Jessica Nelson (North Providence, R.I.) led Nichols with a double-double, scoring a game-high 22 points to go with a game-best 13 rebounds. Ashley Robidoux (Milford, Mass.) added 14 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, while Chelsea Shaughnessy (Halifax, Mass.) scored seven points, pulled down six rebounds and had a game-best five steals.

Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) scored 19 points for the Chargers, while Mari Meserve (Carver, Mass.) pulled down 11 boards, including nine in the first half.

Katelyn Stravinsky gave the Chargers a 5-2 lead just over three minutes into the game, but the Bison held Colby-Sawyer scoreless over the next 8:11 while building a three-point lead, 11-8. A Shaughnessy mid-court steal evolved into an easy lay-in to cap an 8-3 run to put the Bison up 11 with 3:22 left in the frame, and Nichols held on to lead, 27-18 at the half.

A free throw from Emily Yourie (Ellington, Conn.) at the 14-minute mark of the second half capped a 15-7 run and gave Nichols its largest lead of 19 points. Colby-Sawyer quickly chipped away at the lead and cut the Bison's advantage down to eight on an 11-0 run spanning the next three and a half minutes.

The Chargers got as close as six with a three-pointer from Stravinsky at 5:43, making it 47-41 in favor of the Bison, but Nichols rebounded into a double-digit lead four more times, including the final instance on a pair of free throws by Nelson with nine seconds left for the 63-52 final.

Nichols out-rebounded Colby-Sawyer, 53-43, including a 34-29 advantage on the defensive glass. The Bison parlayed 17 Chargers turnovers into 20 points. Nichols' transition game proved potent with 12 fast-break points.

Nichols will complete tournament play Tuesday in a 4 p.m. game against Skidmore. Colby-Sawyer faces the Thoroughbreds Wednesday at 4 p.m. to round out tourney action.
