Women's Hockey Holds Off Panthers, 3-2, to Snap Skid

Box Score HARRISVILLE, R.I. (Jan. 22) – First year forward Megan Gerein (Dubuque, Iowa) scored two goals to lead the Nichols College women's ice hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Plymouth State Saturday evening in an ECAC Women's East game at the June Rockwell Levy Rink. With the win, Nichols snaps a seven-game losing streak and improves to 3-13-0 overall and 2-8-0 in conference play.

The start of the game was a stalemate with both teams battling for the puck. However, Nichols capitalized first when Gerein picked up a rebound in the slot and shot it past the goaltender at 10:07 into the first.

With just over a minute in the first, Nichols struck again when Gerein slid the puck past the diving goaltender for her second goal of the game. The period came to a close with Nichols leading Plymouth 2-0.

Halfway through the second period, Nichols took full advantage of a power play opportunity when junior Mandy Monopla (West Palm Beach, Fla.) shoveled the puck past the goalie after junior Krista-Jean Forand (Plymouth, Mass.) shot the puck under the goaltender's pads.

Plymouth State came out toe to toe with Nichols in the third. But 9:47 into the period they were rewarded when junior Lauren Whiting received a rebound in the slot and fired the puck into the net, cutting the lead down to two. At 18:47, Whiting scored again on a power play chance sliding the puck five hole for the goal.

Penalties plagued Nichols in the third and kept them shorthanded most of the stanza, however, superb play from the penalty kill unit fought off five of six attempts to keep Nichols on top for a 3-2 victory.

Nichols first year goalie Francesca Palazzo (Bernardston, Mass.) improves to 3-10-0 on the season after making 33 saves, while first year Ali Ponte falls to 0-16-1 despite a 31-save effort.

Nichols travels to UMass Boston on Friday with the puck dropping at 4:00 PM, while Plymouth State resumes play at Holy Cross on Wednesday with a 7:00 PM start.
