BERLIN, Conn. (Sept. 13) – Nichols College senior Pat Pio (Somers, Conn.) was the individual champion at the Trinity College Invitational for the second-straight year, finishing Sunday with a two-day total 143 (72, 71).
As a team, the Bison finished fifth of seven squads with a composite 612 (312, 300), 12 strokes behind champion Babson College. Susquehanna University and host Trinity College finished tied for second place with a 305 in the two-day event that started at Blackledge Country Club Saturday, and finished Sunday at Suttle Meadow Country Club.
Pio fired a one-under 71 on Sunday after standing in second place with an even-par 72 on the opening day of the tournament. First year Nick Deni (Enfield, Conn.) finished in 11th place at +8 with a two-day 152 (77, 75).
Senior Shawn Santos (Agawam, Mass.) rallied from a tough opening day to fire a 76 (+4) on Sunday, finishing in 24th place with a two-day 159 (+15). Joshua Paulhus (Sutton, Mass.) also had a much better second day of play, posting a score of 78 (+6) to finish with a two-day 163 (+19) in 28th place.
Daniel Cafasso (Prospect, Conn.) tied for 35th after the final round with a two-day 167 (80, 87), while Bruce Carter, Jr. (Worcester, Mass.) rounded out the squad in 37th with a 36-hole score of 169 (86, 83).
Nichols travels to the Blazers Invitational on Tuesday, hosted by Elms College at Chicopee Country Club in Chicopee, Mass. Pio and the Bison will look to repeat as champions at the event; Pio was two-under par as the individual medalist, and all four Bison players scored under 80 as Nichols took top team honors.
