Box Score

HARRISVILLE, R.I. – Led by a hat trick and an assist from sophomore forward Sarah Scardino, the Norwich University women's hockey team skated past Nichols, 9-0, in an ECAC East game at June Rockwell Levy Rink Friday afternoon. Classmate Brittane Michaud added a goal and three assists as the Cadets improve to 11-7-1 overall and 10-5-1 in conference games. The Bison slip to 1-16-1 overall and 0-13-1 in league action.

The Cadets carried a 3-0 lead into the first intermission, getting on the board at 5:42 when freshman defender Amanda Wilks flipped in a backhander from the left side after the net after a quick pass from the point by classmate Mollie Fitzpatrick.

Melissa Rundlett converted a behind-the-net pass from Michaud, carrying it all the way around the back of the goal before stuffing it under the leg pads of Nichols goaltender Melissa Mansfield (Medford, N.Y.) for a 2-0 lead at 12:41.

Jaclyn Cleugh gave the Cadets a three-goal lead late in the period, putting in a shot on the ice from right in front after Michaud and Sophie Leclerccycled the puck behind the net.

The Cadets tacked on three more in the second frame, the first coming off the stick of Scardino just 2:16 in the period. Wilks and Kelsey Cone fired two quick point-blank shots before Scardino jammed the puck under Mansfield's pads for the 4-0 lead.

Scardino factored in on the next two Cadet goals, first skating the puck in from the point before passing to Leclerc who fired through Mansfield's five hole at 17:03 to make the score 5-0. The sophomore then put the Cadets up by six by batting in a loose bouncing puck while four-on-four with 22 seconds left in the period. Wilks set up the play with a pass from the point to Michaud in the slot for a two-on-one with Scardino.

Michaud lit the lamp with a breakaway just 5:29 into the third period after skating it into the zone down the left side. She cut into the center of the slot before firing past Christine Mazza (Dedham, Mass.), who took over between the pipes at the start of the frame.

Scardino picked up the hat trick a little over two minutes later, one-timing a pass from behind the net from Cone at 7:55, making the score 8-0 in favor of the Cadets. Julie Fortier  put in her own rebound after a breakaway, poking it in past Mazza to cap the scoring at 16:38.

Mansfield made 32 saves in the first two periods of action before giving way to Mazza. She finished with 14 saves. Chiara Traversa stopped all 14 Bison shots in her fourth shutout of the season.

Nichols is back in action Saturday for a Senior Night game against St. Michael's at 5:30 p.m. The Bison will honor Allison Peters (Westford, Mass.) prior to the game. Norwich hosts Williams Saturday at 7 p.m.
