Box Score QUINCY, Mass. – The Nichols College women's basketball team tied the program record for wins in a season Saturday afternoon, defeating Eastern Nazarene, 70-49, for the Bison's 21st win of the season. Nichols, which extended its program-record win streak to 20 games, improves to 21-2 on the season and a perfect 11-0 in TCCC action.
Senior point guard MaryLynn Skarzenski (Woodbridge, N.J.) paced the offense with 15 points while dishing out nine assists and picking up four steals. With 1,261 career points, Skarzenski ranks fifth on the Bison's all-time scoring charts, and stands four points out of fourth place, held by Stacey Hejwosz (2003-07). In tonight's game, Skarzenski set the program record for games played, breaking Hejwosz's record of 107.
Sophomore forward Jessica Nelson (No. Providence, R.I.) added 10 points and seven rebounds, while Margaret Lilly (Ashfield, Mass.) chipped in with 11 points and nine rebounds in the Bison's winning effort.
The Bison took an 11 point, 33-22, lead at the break to 16 points as Lyndsey Bennett (No. Brookfield, Mass.) connected on a three pointer with 17:11 on the clock.
The spread would stay in double digits until Eastern Nazarene's Danielle Koers sank a lay-up with 5:06 remaining, cutting the lead to nine, 48-57.
But two and a half minutes later, the Bison had racked up 11 points, capped by two points in the paint by Nelson and the Crusaders' well had run dry. The Crusaders added a point on a free throw and the visitors ran out the clock after one last deuce to win the game 70-49 and remain undefeated, 11-0, in TCCC play.
The Bison opened the game on a 12-2 run but Eastern Nazarene responded with 11 straight points, capped by a doers offensive rebound and put back, to take a 13-12 lead with ten minutes gone by.
The Bison responded with a 14-1 run of their own, over the course of six minutes, taking a 26-14 lead and pressed into half time leading 33-22.
The Bison shot 41.5% from the field, 78.6% (22 for 28) from the free throw line and won the rebounding battle, 44-34.
Eastern Nazarene's Christine Tucker led all scorers with 16 points to go with her six assists and five steals.
Eastern Nazarene (4-19, 1-10 TCCC) resumes action when they host Salve Regina University on Wednesday, February 18th at 6:00 pm while Nichols faces Regis College in Weston, Mass. on the same date.
