Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. (Nov. 21) – Bianca Bogda scored her first two career goals, and Chiara Traversa turned aside all eight shots that she faced as the Norwich University women's ice hockey team defeated Nichols College, 6-0, in an ECAC East contest Saturday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena.
The Cadets (7-0-0, 6-0-0 ECAC East) broke on top very early in the first period when Melissa Rundlett scored at the 1:01 mark. Sophie Leclerc and Sarah Scardino picked up assists on the goal, which was Rundlett's third of the season.
The red-hot Julie Fortier, who netted her first career hat trick in Friday night's victory over UMass-Boston, made it 2-0 at the 15:45 mark when she netted her sixth goal of the year off assists from Jacqueline Perez and Brittany Casey.
The Cadets completely dominated the second period, outshooting the Bison 18-1 and scoring two more goals. Bogda extended Norwich's lead to 3-0 at 5:25 of the second period when she netted her first collegiate goal off a rebound in front of the net. Ashley Cassan was credited with an assist on the play.
NU made it 4-0 at the 13:23 mark when Caitie Banfield ripped a slap shot from the blue line past Nichols goaltender Melanie Spears (Woburn, Mass.). The goal came right after a Norwich power play expired, and the Cadets continued to pressure the Bison. Kelsey Cone and Sophie Leclerc, who moved the puck out to Banfield, picked up assists on the goal, which was Banfield's second of the year.
Leclerc netted her fifth tally of the season early in the third period, when she scored a power play goal off assists from Amanda Wilks and Banfield at the 1:09 mark. Bogda capped the scoring at the 15:21 mark when she scored off a feed from Banfield.
Norwich controlled the third period, outshooting Nichols by a 15-2 margin. For the game, the Cadets held a 44-8 edge in shots.
Traversa (5-0-0) was perfect in the Cadets goal en route to her first shutout of the year. Spears (1-3-0) made 38 stops in the loss for the Bison.
Norwich went 1-for-4 on the power play, while Nichols was 0-for-4 with the extra attacker. The Bison drop to 1-4-0 (1-4-0 ECAC East) following the loss.
Nichols takes a break from action until after Thanksgiving, continuing its road trip at Sacred Heart in a 7 p.m. game on December 2.
